I attended the keynote addresses given by the CEOs of Macy's and eBay. While their business are different, both CEOs see big potential in shopping via mobile devices such as the iPhone.
It's important to remember that mobile doesn't necessarily make the ecommerce pie bigger. Just as when ecommerce itself came along, the value proposition of mobile commerce is convenience. It's good to see companies making it easier for consumers to shop in new ways, and it's interesting to ponder whether an "Amazon.com" of mobile commerce will come along and take current retailers by surprise.
